Travel Inspirations – Traveling Off the Beaten Path

Looking to escape? There are some lovely parts of the world not too far from the popular, overcrowded spots that everyone flocks to.

In the Canadian Rockies, consider Waterton National Park – a lesser-known UNESCO World Heritage site south of Banff National Park alongside the U.S. border with great trails as and a navigable lake.

Did you know there are ancient pyramids high above Mexico’s Oaxaca City? Monte Alban attracts far fewer visitors than Chichen Itza or Teotihuacan and predates both of them! Explore to your heart’s content.

Or discover the many trails of the Lost Sierra, California on foot, on horseback, on a trail bike, or on an off-road motorcycle—- a 4-hour drive northeast of San Francisco will find you in spectacular wilderness.

And for something completely different, explore the mountains of Utuado just a short drive from San Juan, Puerto Rico — but a world apart! Explore indigenous history. Experience peace and quiet!

Let’s find your perfect escape – but shhhhh, don’t tell anyone!

Big cities can be a great option for families too— the key is to have activities that suit different age groups and fitness levels and things of interest for everyone. This can be museums, art galleries, sports events, sightseeing tours, shopping, dining, and parks.

Let’s discuss your family dynamic and find the perfect place for your next multi-generational vacation!

10 Resorts Where You Can Stretch Your Dollar

10 resorts where you can really stretch your vacation dollar. -3- to 4.5-star properties in the Caribbean and Mexico that are known for offering great value. Nine welcome guests of all ages, and one offers a kids-free ambiance, as indicated below.

Each of these resorts includes all meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and many sports and activities in one price that you pay upfront.

Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort Montego Bay, a 3-star resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica — This property is about seven miles from Sangster International Airport and was renovated this year. It’s a family-friendly option, with the KidSpree activity center for ages 6 months to 12 years and the Teen Scene video gaming room. Dining options range from barefoot beachside meals to a reservations-required Italian restaurant. There is a buffet-style restaurant with pizza bar as well. A fitness facility, spa, miniature golf and a kids-free pool (in addition to the main pool) round out the perks here.

Barcelo Punta Cana, a 3.5-star resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic — White-washed buildings capped by red-tile roofs give this resort a Mediterranean feel. Play on one of the three tennis courts, try out the climbing wall or go kayaking or windsurfing. A recently added second pool has doubled the resort’s pool capacity and deck area. On-site restaurants specialize in French, Italian, Japanese, Tex-Mex and Dominican cuisine. For young guests, there’s an activities club for ages 4 to 12 and a teen disco.

Punta Cana Princess All Suites Resort & Spa, a 4-star resort in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic — This is a kids-free retreat, where guests are pampered with all-suite accommodations and butler service on the beach. Other attractions include a freshwater pool (one of four pools on-site), evening shows, five restaurants, three bars and a “mini spa” at the beach with Jacuzzi and sauna. In addition to on-site amenities, guests have full access to two nearby sister properties.

IBEROSTAR Costa Dorada, a 4-star resort in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic — Vacationers can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing and sailing in crystal-clear waters in front of this resort. Other diversions like tennis, yoga and archery also are available. Children ages 4 to 12 can participate in activities at their own “mini club.”

Sandos Caracol Eco Resort & Spa, a 3.5-star resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico — This resort edges a natural area of jungles, lagoons and deep, freshwater sinkholes called cenotes; guests receive a complimentary snorkeling tour in the largest cenote. There are Italian- and Mexican-themed dinner buffets, as well as Asian, Mediterranean and Brazilian a la carte restaurants. The kid’s club is divided into three tiers — ages 2 to 3, 4 to 7 and 8 to 12 — and the entertainment staff organizes games and activities for teens. Younger children who are enrolled in the youth program enjoy a daily trip to the resort’s water park. A kids-free section of accommodations is scheduled to open in late December.

Occidental Grand Xcaret, a 4.5-star resort in Playa del Carmen, Mexico — This retreat is next door to Xcaret, an eco-archaeological preserve. Guests receive discounted passes to the park, where they can snorkel through caves, explore Mayan ruins or see jaguars, tropical birds and butterflies. Back at the resort, 11 restaurants, five pools, 10 whirlpools and a private beach hugging a tranquil cove await.

Flamingo Cancun Resort, a 3-star property in Cancun, Mexico — This resort is in the middle of Cancun’s hotel zone, putting guests within walking distance of shops, restaurants and clubs. Amenities include complimentary Internet, room service, a fitness center and a beachfront restaurant and bar.

Hotel Riu Vallarta, a 4.5-star hotel in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — This resort is housed in a palatial structure on Bandera Bay, with the Sierra Madre range in the distance. Diversions for guests include two beachfront swimming pools, kayaking and catamaran rides, a day-to-night entertainment program and the Pacha nightclub. Introductory scuba lessons are offered in one of the pools. A main restaurant with buffets and cooking stations is supplemented by three specialty restaurants.

Marival Resort & Suites, a 3.5-star resort in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — The accommodations here include two- and three-bedroom suites, making this a good choice for family vacations. A club for children ages 4 to 12 offers miniature golf, movies and camping nights, while older kids 13 to 17 are entertained with archery, soccer, pool and Xbox video games. Dinnertime brings a range of choices at six restaurants, including themed buffet nights at Casabella, brick-oven pizzas at Piazzetta dei Forni and Mediterranean dishes by candlelight at La Pergola.

Royal Solaris Los Cabos, a 4-star resort in Los Cabos, Mexico — This resort provides several pools, including a large main pool with swim-up bar and shallow area for tykes, a relaxation pool with adjoining hot tub overlooking the Sea of Cortes, and an animal-themed water park with slides and fountains. Arts and crafts and story time sessions are organized for little ones, and teens have their own space, with arcade games and pool tables, that’s open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Parents, meanwhile, can indulge in a spa treatment, hit the gym or unwind at the sports bar or under a beachfront palapa.

10 Tips for Traveling with Sensitive Skin

10 Tips for Traveling with Sensitive Skin

When traveling, do you know what hotel toiletries you can rely on and which products you should never leave home without? Especially if you have sensitive skin, here are a few expert tips to follow so both you and your skin can have a beautiful trip.

hotel-bath-products.jpg

Packing and Planning Like a Pro

 1. Stick with familiar hotel chains.
If you like a hotel, you can get familiar with the products. When you find products you’re into, take the extras home to put in your guest room. And then you can always buy them when you run out!

2. Get travel size versions of your tried and true products.
Fortunately for all of us, there are a variety of websites that sell travel-sized versions of very popular and effective products. 3floz.com has everything you need for face, body, men, kids and sun protection. There’s also a wide selection of more clinical-grade lines at SkinTypeSolutionsStore.com (click on “travel sizes” and shop by your skin type).

3. Know the two items you can’t leave home without.
You don’t need to pack your entire skincare arsenal when you travel, but the most important products to bring with you are cleanser and moisturizer, since using the wrong formulation can upset your sensitive skin—and make for a less-than-fun vacation.

4. Plan ahead to prevent irritation.
And if you think of it while you’re packing, bring your own pillowcase since hotel detergents can wreak havoc on your skin.

Things to Remember When Flying

 5. Remember to hydrate before, during, and after your flight.
You can use your favorite moisturizer or go with a facial mist (just make sure it’s 3 ounces or smaller). Hand cream comes in handy as well.

6. Take advantage of the hot towels.
If you’re lucky enough to fly first class and you’re offered a hot towel, go ahead and refresh. Follow with moisturizer and you should be good for the duration of the flight.

7. Steer clear of airport samples.
It may be tempting to try new products when you’re exploring airport shops during a layover but remember this can be asking for trouble, especially with sensitive skin. Stick to what you know your skin can tolerate.

Hotel Product Pointers

 8. Don’t get a facial while travelling.
As tempted as you may be to hit the hotel spa, opt for a massage instead. Your skin is more sensitive after air travel and climate changes.

9. Beware of body lotions and washes.
If you’re skin is accustomed to a humid environment, it’s more likely to react to fragrance if you travel to an arid destination. And whatever you do, don’t apply body lotions to your face.

10. Know the right (and wrong) way to use shampoo and conditioner.
Feel free to use the hair conditioner hotels provide to shave your legs (and on your hair, of course). Don’t use the shampoo on your body as it may be too harsh for your skin.

8 Family Tips for Extended Trips

8 Family Tips for Extended Trips

 By Susan MacCallum-Whitcomb

Some family vacations are weeklong sprints; others—involving more days and more far-flung stops—feel like The Amazing Race. And while the basic tips for foreign travel with kids still apply, the latter does require extra prep work. Whether the aim is to make the most of a school break, maximize a career break, or simply enjoy extreme bonding time, you’ll want your adventure go as smoothly as possible. So here are some lessons that I learned from my own round-the-world family marathon.

1. Avoid “been there, done that” syndrome by covering diverse destinations. Alternate urban with rural locales and iconic ones with new discoveries. Picking spots with similar climates is a bonus, though, because it lets you pare back on packing.

2. Ease kids in—and out—of culture shock by positioning the most exotic (read: challenging) areas mid trip. To ensure they aren’t too extreme visit the Department of State travel site. It has info on safety issues, entry requirements, and more.

3. Since costs add up fast when flying as a family, you should overcome any budget airline bias and explore all options. Attitude Travel has the low-down on low-fare carriers that allow you to affordably connect the dots on your itinerary.

4. For some kids, repeated take-offs aren’t just tedious: they’re painful. If ear discomfort is an issue for anyone in your brood, buy specially-designed plugs called Ear Planes. Children’s sizes are available at pharmacies for around $6.

5. Where you stay is as important as where you go. I frequently choose vacation rentals over conventional hotels. Savings aside, rental digs offer families privacy, space, and the freedom to move at your own pace. HomeAway is my go-to site.

6. In less developed places, where you benefit from having staff for support, I prefer intimate boutique hotels or eco-lodges. My best deal? At Eco Hotels of the World I found the magical Rivertime Resort inLaos for $38 a night!

7. To help offset any lost school time, intersperse independent outings with excursions guided by local experts. I love the ones offered worldwide by Urban Adventures. Free tours led by the volunteers from Global Greeters come highly recommended too.

8. Finally, you should always pack a first aid kit. However, on long trips more than Pepto Bismol and Band-Aids may be needed. For parental peace of mind, check IAMAT: it includes details on vaccinations plus an international doctor database.
